Etymology: < the name of Briareus (classical Latin Briareus , ancient Greek Βριάρεως ), a hundred-handed giant of Greek mythology. Compare earlier Briarean adj.In quot. 1589 via Middle French Briareus, noun (1579 in the passage translated; also 1559 in the passage translated in quot. 1579 at Briarean adj.; the underlying Greek texts use a form of the proper name in each case).
Now rare.
An imaginary monster or person resembling Briareus, spec. in having a hundred, or many, hands or arms. Hence: a person capable of doing many things at once; a person of wide-ranging power or influence.In Greek mythology, Briareus was one of three giants having a hundred hands or arms each, who fought with Zeus against the Titans.
