Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Briançon.
Etymology: < Briançon (French Briançon), the name of a town in south-eastern France, where the substance was originally (and until the early 20th cent. exclusively) collected. Compare post-classical Latin manna brianzona Briançon manna (16th cent.) and French manne de Briançon (1694 or earlier).
Now rare.
Briançon manna n. (also manna of Briançon) a (dried) sugary substance, formerly used medicinally as a mild laxative, which contains the sugar melezitose and is produced by certain insects, esp. aphids of the genus Cinara, feeding on the sap of the European larch, Larix decidua; cf. manna n.1 3, honeydew n. 1.Briançon manna was previously thought to be exuded from the needles of L. decidua.
