Etymology: < post-classical Latin adhortativus (4th cent. in a grammarian) < classical Latin adhortāt- , past participial stem of adhortārī adhort v. + -īvus -ive suffix. Compare earlier adhortatory adj. Compare also earlier hortative adj. and exhortative adj.
