Origin: A borrowing from Hindi. Etymon: Hindi ṭhagī.
Etymology: < Hindi ṭhagī the practice of a Thug (thug n. 1) < ṭhag thug n. + , suffix expressing belonging (see -i suffix2).The use denoting a person (see sense 2) developed within English, perhaps originally by misinterpretation of uses in compounds (such as thuggee suppression : see Compounds) by speakers outside India. With this sense compare earlier thug n. 1. For a similar sense development compare slightly earlier dacoity n. 2.
