Etymology: Old English þyften , þeften (also -an ), representing an Old Germanic *þuftinī , doubtfully considered to be feminine of *gi)þuftô , in Old English geþofta , Old Norse þópti a bench-fellow (compare thoft n.); the suffix being -en suffix2, as in Old English þíwen maidservant, fyxen vixen n. and adj., etc.
Obsolete.
A maidservant; a handmaid, female slave.
