Etymology: < French adhésif (adjective) having the ability to stick or join, sticky (1478 in Middle French), (in medicine) designating an inflammation that causes the adhesion of organs or structures which are usually separate (1866), (noun) (in medicine) sticky substance used for attaching dressings to the skin (1790 or earlier) and its etymon post-classical Latin adhaesivus having the property of adhering, sticky (12th or 13th cent.), expressive of adherence or assent (14th cent. in a British source) < classical Latin adhaes- , past participial stem of adhaerere adhere v. + -īvus -ive suffix.
