Etymology: < thrombocyte n. + -o- connective + -penia comb. form, after German Thrombocytopenie ( H. Eppinger Die Hepato-lienalen Erkrankungen (1920) 295; now usually Thrombozytopenie).
Medicine.
Reduction of the number of thrombocytes in the blood (often resulting in impaired clotting); an instance of this. Also called thrombopenia.
