A member of an Irish agrarian protest organization instituted in 1806, which issued demands and threats relating to tithes and other grievances, signed under the name ‘Captain Thresher’.The Threshers were one of a number of secret agrarian groups with broadly similar objectives and methods active in Ireland in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Cf. e.g. white boy n. 4, Oakboy n. at oak n. Compounds 3, Molly Maguire n. 1.
