Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Bosman.
Etymology: < the name of Jean-Marc Bosman (b. 1964), Belgian association footballer, who brought a case successfully to the European Court in 1995, which resulted in the ruling.
Sport (originally and chiefly Association Football).
In full Bosman ruling. A European Court ruling which obliges professional sports clubs to allow players over the age of 25 to move freely between European Union clubs once their contracts have expired, without the new club being required to pay a transfer fee, and which prohibits limits being set on the number of non-national EU players a club may deploy. Also: a player available on a free transfer under this ruling. on a Bosman: (available) on a free transfer under the Bosman ruling. The ruling was made by the European Court on 20 September 1995, and ratified on 12 December 1995, under Article 48 of the Treaty of Rome.
