Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: a- prefix6, Greek χόνδρος , -plasia comb. form.
Etymology: < a- prefix6 + ancient Greek χόνδρος cartilage (see chondro- comb. form) + -plasia comb. form, after French achondroplasie (J. Parrot 1878, in Bull. de la Soc. d'Anthropol. de Paris 1 297). Compare ancient Greek ἄχονδρος without cartilage.
Medicine.
A heritable (autosomal dominant) form of dwarfism which results from defective conversion of cartilage into bone, and is characterized by shortening of the long bones of the limbs, often with enlargement of the head and midfacial hypoplasia. Also: any of a group of similar disorders in various breeds of domestic animal.
