Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: English thraw , throw v.1, mouse n.
Etymology: < thraw, Scots variant of throw v.1 (compare Forms 1α. at that entry) + mouse n., so called on account of the superstition that if the mouse ran over the foot of a person or animal it could cause it to become twisted or paralysed.
Scottish (chiefly north-eastern).
A shrew.
