Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the first syllable. If the subsequent element is an existing word, it is likely to retain its original stress pattern, e.g. Thraco-Phrygian Brit. /ˌθreɪkə(ʊ)ˈfrɪdʒɪən/, U.S. /ˌθreɪkoʊˈfrɪdʒiən/.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Thraco-.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Thraco- < classical Latin Thrācus (see Thracian adj.) + -o- -o- connective.Compare French Thraco- , German Thraco- . Compare also ancient Greek Θρᾳκο- , in Θρᾳκοφοίτης person who keeps going to Thrace, attested in a fragment of Aristophanes. With Thraco-Illyrian compare post-classical Latin Thraco-Illyricus (1806 or earlier), French thraco-illyrien (1824 or earlier), German Thraco-illyrisch (1827 or earlier); with Thraco-Phrygian compare post-classical Latin Thraco-phrygicus (1832 or earlier), French thraco-phrygien (1836 or earlier), German Thraco-Phrygisch (1828 or earlier).
