Etymology: Old English þrítigoða , -e , < þrítig + -oða, -oðe (see -th suffix2), becoming in Middle English þrittyþe, threttyth, in 16th cent., by assimilation to the current form of the cardinal, thirtith, therttieth, thirtieth. Compare Old Norse þrítugande, -tugunde, -tegunde, later þrítugti. The West Germanic languages have a form in -ēsta, -esta, Old Frisian thrítegesta, Old High German drîzugôsto, German dreissigste; so modern Icelandic þrítugasti: compare Caxton's thyrttyest.
