Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Dutch. Or (ii) a borrowing from Middle Low German. Etymons: Dutch boeier; Middle Low German bojer.
Etymology: < Dutch boeier or its equivalent Middle Low German bojer, bojert kind of small cargo ship (see boyer n.), perhaps with remodelling of the ending after -art , variant of -ard suffix. Compare Swedish bojart (see boyer n.).
Originally Scottish. Obsolete (historical in later use).
