单词 thorough-
释义

thorough-prefix

In sense 1, primary stress is usually retained by a subsequent element. In sense 2, primary stress is attracted to this prefix.
Forms: see thorough prep. and adv.
Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: through- prefix.
Etymology: Originally a variant of through- prefix (compare discussion at thorough prep. and adv.). Common from the 16th to the 19th centuries, apparently often preferred over through- prefix (especially in literary and poetic use); latterly often in formations in which there is a perceived connection with thorough adv. 1 or thorough adj. 2.Formations are attested from the 13th cent. onwards, frequently as variants of existing words in through- prefix. Formations for which there is no parallel form in through- prefix are very rare; beside the examples given below, compare thorough-pacer n., thoroughgoer n. Among examples where the formation in thorough- prefix is significantly earlier than the parallel form in through- prefix compare thoroughgoing adj. New formations are rare after the mid 19th cent.
