Etymology: Possibly < Old French bord, bort, bastard; the word is used in modern French (Littré, supplement) as bord and bort, but is not in Cotgrave 1611.
The fragments removed from diamonds in cutting, when too small for jewellery; also diamonds of too coarse a quality for jewellery: used to make diamond powder.
