Originally U.S. Used colloquially in humorous phrases such as they didn't get the memo, they missed the memo, indicating that a person is unaware (or acts as if unaware) of an established state of affairs or expected pattern of behaviour. Also in positive contexts, as they got the memo, etc. Also in extended use; cf. quot. 2011.
