Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin thero-; Greek θηρο-.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin and scientific Latin thero- (in e.g. therologia therology n.), and its etymon (ii) ancient Greek θηρο- (in e.g. θηροκτόνος killing wild beasts), combining form of θήρ wild beast < the same Indo-European base as classical Latin ferus (compare feral adj.2), Old Church Slavonic zvěrĭ, Old Prussian swīrins (accusative plural), Lithuanian žvėris, all in the same sense.Compare German thero-.
