Origin: A borrowing from Pali. Etymon: Pali theravāda.
Etymology: < Pali theravāda ancient doctrine, literally ‘doctrine of the elders’ < thera (religious) elder, (senior) bhikkhu, use as noun of thera senior ( < Sanskrit sthavira broad, solid, old, apparently ultimately < sthā- to stand: see stand v.) + vāda speech, doctrine (ultimately < Sanskrit vad- to speak: see ode n.).Pronunciations with initial /t/ reflect the initial aspirated stop of the Pali etymon; pronunciations with initial /θ/ developed within English as spelling pronunciations.
A school of early Buddhism constituting one of the two major traditions of Buddhism, now practised in Sri Lanka and South-east Asia. Cf. Mahayana n.Theravada is one of the schools referred to in Mahayana Buddhism by the depreciative term Hinayana (see Hinayana n.), which adherents of Theravada do not typically use. It is characterized by greater conservatism in comparison with Mahayana Buddhism, with emphasis on the ideal of the Arhat, and by fidelity to the texts of the Tripitaka, which constitute its sacred canon.In quot. 1836 denoting the doctrines of this school.
