Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: brain n., fungus n.
Etymology: < brain n. + fungus n. In sense 1 after post-classical Latin fungus cerebri (1646 or earlier). In sense 2 the fungus is so called on account of its shape.
1. Medicine. Protrusion of brain or meningeal tissue through a fracture or other defect in the skull, esp. when accompanied by ulceration, infection, and the formation of granulation tissue; an instance of this; the protruding tissue.

1874 Rep. Med. Officer Privy Council New Ser. III. 200 The so-called brain-fungus, the continued protrusion of brain-matter through apertures in the skull produced by mechanical injuries, may in certain cases find a physical explanation.

2. Any of several fungi which grow as a rounded mass with a lobed and folded surface, esp. Tremella mesenterica (also more fully yellow brain fungus), a gelatinous fungus commonly found on rotting wood, and the cauliflower fungus, Sparassis crispa.
