Etymology: < classical Latin Achillēus of or resembling Achilles ( < ancient Greek Ἀχίλλειος of Achilles < Ἀχιλλεύς (classical Latin Achillēs ) Achilles, the name of a Greek hero who was invulnerable except in the heel (see Achilles heel n.) + -ειος, suffix forming adjectives) + -an suffix. Compare Middle French Achillien (15th cent., rare).Achilles is one of the main characters in the Iliad of Homer. Achilles occurs as the name of the Greek hero in English contexts from Old English onwards (in Middle English also as Achille, Achile, Achillis).
