Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin theorus; Greek θεωρός.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin theorus (1504 or earlier), and its etymon (ii) ancient Greek θεωρός envoy, ambassador, spectator, person who travels in order to see things (see theory n.). Compare Middle French theore , French théore (1572 in the passage translated in quot. 1603; 1559 as theori (plural) in the passage translated in quot. 1579). Compare theoria n.2In plural form theoroi after the Greek plural form.

An envoy sent on behalf of a state, esp. to consult an oracle or perform a religious rite. Cf. theoria n.2
