Etymology: Probably < thea- (in scientific Latin Theaceae, family name (1814 or earlier; compare French Théacées , family name: Mirbel, 1813) < Thea , genus name (see tea n.¹) + -aceae : see -aceous suffix) + -n-, inserted for euphony + -ine suffix⁵.

Biochemistry.

An amino acid which is found primarily in plants of the family Theaceae, esp. the tea plant Camellia sinensis, and is frequently used as a dietary supplement and to treat anxiety.Theanine is l-γ-glutamylethylamide; C₂H₅(NH)COC₂H₂C(NH₂)COOH. Also with modifying letter distinguishing its two optical isomers: the l-form is naturally-occurring and the d-form occurs in commercially synthesized theanine.
