单词 theal
释义

thealthelen.

Forms: (Old English þelu, þel, þell), 1500s thele, thel, theall, 1600s (1800s dialect) theal.
Etymology: In 16th cent. thele, corresponding to Old English -þelu feminine occurring in combination bencþelu (also neuter plural) ‘bench-floor’, and buruhþelu ‘castle-floor’, agreeing in sense with þel, þell, neuter, board, plank, floor, in one place ‘(iron) plate’. These point to Old Germanic forms *þelâ (feminine), *þelom neuter, whence also *þeljon, *þiljōn, West German *þilljō, Old English þille, Old Norse þilja feminine deal, plank, Old High German dilla board, Middle Low German dele, Dutch deel deal, plank: compare also the Finnish borrowed word teljo. The long gap between the latest Old English example of -þelu and the English thele, after 1500, is noteworthy; perhaps the word came down within a limited district. Compare the place-name þelwæl ( Anglo-Saxon Chron. an. 923), Thelwall in Cheshire.
