单词 tewtaw
释义

tewtawn.

Forms: Also 1700s tewtow, 1800s dialect tewter.
Etymology: Goes with tewtaw v.If the noun was the earlier, its derivation would probably be < tew v.1 + taw n.2, or tow n.1 = ‘that which tews taw or tow’; but if the verb was the earlier, taw n.2 would naturally be the verb, and tew either tew n.1 or some other word. The origin of the second element was apparently lost before the word became tewter. Johnson knew only the verb which he considered a reduplicated form of tew.
Obsolete.
An implement for breaking hemp or flax.
