Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Borneo.
Etymology: < the name of Borneo (Malay Borneo), a large island in the Malay Archipelago.The name of the island is probably ultimately < the name of the country of Brunei (see Bruneian n.), which is located on the island. (a) camphor obtained from the tree Dryobalanops sumatrensis, having a more peppery smell than common camphor and consisting chiefly of borneol; (b) (also Borneo camphor tree) a tall evergreen forest tree, Dryobalanops sumatrensis (family Dipterocarpaceae), native to Indonesia and Malaysia, which is the source of Borneo camphor and of a valuable timber (cf. kapur n.).
