Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Tetrapoda.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Tetrapoda < ancient Greek τετραποδ- , τετράπους four-footed ( < τετρα- tetra- comb. form + ποδ- , ποῦς : see -pod comb. form) + scientific Latin -a -a suffix2. Compare earlier tetrapod n. and slightly earlier tetrapod adj.
With plural agreement.
1. Entomology. A former division of butterflies comprising those in which the first pair of legs are reduced, leaving only two functional pairs for walking. Also: butterflies of this division (collectively or individually); nymphalids.Now usually regarded as constituting the family Nymphalidae. Now rare and not in technical use.
