Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French acheuléen.
Etymology: < French acheuléen, noun (G. de Mortillet 1872, in Classification de l'âge de la pierre in Matériaux pour l'histoire primitive et naturelle de l'homme 2nd Series 7 465) and adjective (1876 or earlier) < Saint-Acheul , the name of a suburb of Amiens (department of Somme, France), where hand-axes of this period were found in 1859 + -éen -ean suffix. Compare French type de St-Acheul (G. de Mortillet 1869), époque de St-Acheul (G. de Mortillet 1872).With the form Acheulian compare -ian suffix.
Archaeology.
Of, relating to, or designating an early Palaeolithic period in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and India, preceding the Mousterian, and distinguished in particular by the manufacture of stone hand axes. Also as n. (with the): the Acheulean period or culture.
