Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; partly modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: Latin terricola , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin terricola terricole n. + -ous suffix; compare -colous comb. form. Compare slightly later terricole adj. In specific use in sense 1 after scientific Latin Terricolae, former division name (see terricole adj. and n.).
1. Zoology. Of an animal: living on the ground or (esp.) in the earth or soil; spec. designating the former division Terricolae of annelid worms, including earthworms (now rare). Cf. terricole adj. 1.
