Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian terribilità.
Etymology: < Italian terribilità, †terribiltà terrifying or awesome quality (1309; 1520 or earlier in the specific use with reference to art: see below) < post-classical Latin terribilitas terribility n.The use in quot. 1877 at sense 1 reflects the attribution of the quality of terribilità to Michelangelo by his contemporaries (e.g. by S. del Piombo in a letter of 9 Nov. 1520: see G. Milanesi Les correspondants de Michel-Ange (1890) 24). Not fully naturalized in English. O.E.D. Suppl. (1986) only records the non-naturalized pronunciation (teribilita·) /teribiliˈta/.
