单词 termes
释义

termesn.

Brit. /ˈtəːmiːz/, U.S. /ˈtərmiz/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Termes.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Termes, genus name ( Linnaeus Systema naturae (ed. 10, 1758) 609) < post-classical Latin termes (plural termites ) woodworm, maggot (5th cent.; a636 in Isidore), variant (probably influenced by terere : see below) of classical Latin tarmes < the base of terere to rub (see trite adj.) + the base of -mus , suffix forming nouns and adjectives. Compare later termite n., which shows formal overlap with the present word in plural forms.
An insect of the genus Termes, which originally included all termites but is now restricted to a small number of tropical species; (in form Termes) the genus itself.Instances of the regular plural termites are not clearly distinct from the plural of termite n., and are treated at that entry.
