Etymology: In the βform, < Latin tempestuōsus : compare tempestus , doublet of tempestās tempest n.; so obsolete French tempestueus, -uos (14th cent.), modern French tempêtueux = Provençal tempestuos, Spanish tempestuoso, Portuguese tempestuoso. The αforms appear to be analogical, after other adjectives in -eous, -ious, of various etymology.
