Etymology: < French akène, achène (1802) and its etymon scientific Latin achena ( J. de Necker Elementa botanica (1790) I. 30) < ancient Greek ἀ- a- prefix6 + χαίνειν to gape (see chama n.); compare Hellenistic Greek ἀχανής not gaping. Compare earlier achenium n.With the form achaene compare scientific Latin achaenium achenium n.
Botany.
An indehiscent, dry, one-seeded fruit originating from a single carpel, such as the ‘seed’ of a sunflower or dandelion; = achenium n.
