Etymology: Old English tęmman , tęmian , = Old Low German *temmjan (Middle Low German, Middle Dutch temmen , temen , Dutch, Low German temmen , Low German tämen ), Old High German *zammjan , zęmman (Middle High German zem(m)en , German zähmen ), Old Norse, Norwegian tęmja (Swedish tämja , Danish tæmme ), Gothic tamjan , < Old Germanic *tamo^z , tame adj. The Old English regular form tęmman was superseded by tęmian (Sievers Ags. Gram. §400 Anm. 2), whence Middle English temien , teme , which was displaced in 15th cent. by tamen , tame v.¹, conformed to tame adj. (The forms tymian, tymen, are irregular.) The cognate languages have preserved the umlauted form.
