Etymology: < the names of Llewellyn Hilleth Thomas (1903–92), English physicist, and Enrico Fermi (see Fermi n.).
Physics.
Used attributively with reference to a model of the electronic charge distribution in an atom in which the electrons are treated as a gas of independent particles obeying Fermi-Dirac statistics and the exclusion principle is taken into account, proposed by Thomas and Fermi in 1927 and 1928 respectively.
