单词 thomas atkins
释义

Thomas Atkinsn.

Brit. /ˌtɒməs ˈatkɪnz/, U.S. /ˌtɑməs ˈætkɪnz/
Origin: From proper names. Etymons: proper names Thomas, Atkins.
Etymology: < the male forename Thomas (see Thomas n.) + the surname Atkins.Early examples given here show Thomas Atkins used as the name of a fictitious private whose details appeared in the specimen forms in the official British Army regulations from 1815 until the early 20th cent. (compare quots. 18151, 18152, 1864, etc.). Although other names were used on some specimen forms (as e.g. John Thomas , William Jones : compare quot. 18152), Thomas Atkins was used in the forms for privates in the Cavalry or Infantry, and was therefore the best known. Various historical individuals have been suggested as motivating the selection of this particular name for the purpose, including an infantryman Thomas Atkins captured by American forces at Yorktown in 1781 and a Private Thomas Atkins serving in the French Revolutionary Wars, whose noble death at the Battle of Boxtel in 1794 was observed by the future Duke of Wellington; however, the motivating factor may be that Thomas Atkins was considered a relatively common and unremarkable British working class name (compare similar use of e.g. John Smith); for further discussion see Oxf. Dict. National Biogr. at Thomas Atkins.
Now rare and chiefly with reference to the First World War (1914–18).
