Etymology: < Latin tenet ‘he holds’, 3rd singular of tenēre to hold. See also tenent n.Probably adopted from modern Latin writings, in which it introduced the opinion or doctrine that a person, church, or sect holds. Compare similar use of habitat, incipit, explicit. N.E.D. (1911) gives the pronunciation as (te·nėt, †tī·nėt) /ˈtɛnɪt/, /ˈtiːnɪt/.
