Now chiefly historical.
The period extending from Christmas Day to the end of the first week in January.

1831 Morning Chron. 29 Dec. A number of cases of assault were yesterday heard..in consequence of the parties ‘taking a drop too much’ at this ‘boxing time’.
1841 Times 1 Jan. 7/2 He really thought it would be prudent in their employers to give them a hint not to ‘raise their elbows’ so very often, even in ‘boxing time’.
1880 H. A. Oldfield Sketches from Nipal II. xi. 344 It [sc. Durga Puja] is in this respect, as well as in the feasting and drinking which goes on, something like our ‘boxing-time’ at Christmas.
2000 G. Dallas 1918: War & Peace (2001) 261 In the early nineteenth century ‘boxing time’ extended into the first week of January. It became a ‘day’ when, in 1871, Parliament instituted bank holidays.
