Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin tellūs.
Etymology: < classical Latin tellūs earth, ground, also personified as a goddess, planet earth < the same Indo-European base as theal n.
1. The goddess of the earth in Roman mythology. Also: the earth personified.The personified form may be imagined as either female or (less commonly) male. The Roman deity is occasionally also imagined as male (as in quot. 1513).
