Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin tellūr- , tellūs , -ian suffix.
Etymology: Originally < classical Latin tellūr-, tellūs earth (see Tellus n.) + -ian suffix. In forms tellurion , tellurium , remodelled after nouns from Latin or Greek ending in -ion or -ium (compare -y suffix4).The form tellarium appears to have been first used in error by George Adams (subsequently abandoned by him); compare:1766 B. Martin App. Descr. & Use Globes i. 9 By the Globe formed into a Tellurian, the Phænomena of the annual and diurnal Motions are most naturally and simply presented, even by the Consent of our learned Author [sc. George Adams] (for so I suppose he means this Instrument by what he calls a Tellarium).
A mechanical model, typically clockwork, illustrating the effect of the earth's diurnal rotation, annual revolution, and obliquity of axis in causing the alternations of day and night and the succession of the seasons. Cf. orrery n. Now chiefly historical.In quot. 1933 figurative.
