Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: tellurium n., -ic suffix.
Etymology: < tellur- (in tellurium n.) + -ic suffix.Originally in telluric oxide n., after German †Telluroxyd (1802 in the text translated in quot. 1804 at main sense, or earlier; now Telluroxid ). With telluric acid n. compare German Tellursäure (1812 or earlier), French acide tellurique (1823).
Chemistry and Mineralogy.
Containing or combined with tellurium, esp. in its higher common oxidation state or valency (+6); spec. designating native alloys or ores containing tellurium and a specified metal, as telluric gold, telluric silver, etc. Cf. tellurous adj.Now rare except in telluric acid n. at Compounds.Recorded earliest in telluric oxide n. at Compounds.
