/ˈtəːs(ə)l//ˈtɪəs(ə)l/
Forms: α. Middle English tercelle, tersell(e, Middle English–1600s tercell, tersel, 1500s–1700s tersal (1600s terssell), Middle English– tercel. β. Etymology: < Old French tercel (a1200 in Godefroy), beside terçuel (12–13th cent.), also tresuel, tercieul, = Provençal tersol, tresol, Spanish terzuelo, Italian terz(u)olo < popular Latin tertiolus (13th cent. in Du Cange), diminutive from Latin tertius third: compare Latin fīlius, diminutive fīliolus, Italian figliuolo, French filleul. With the tar- forms, compare bark, barn, clerk, etc.; the γ-forms confuse tarsel and tassel; the δ-forms are influenced by modern French.
