Etymology: < either torup n. or its etymon Virginia Algonquian *tōrəp + a suffix of uncertain origin (probably -ine suffix4).The forms with e reflect an early regional pronunciation; some of these forms are perhaps also influenced by classical Latin terra earth (see terra n.).
1. Originally: any of various small North American turtles of fresh or brackish water, esp. the diamond-backed terrapin, Malaclemys terrapin. In later use more generally: any of various small carnivorous aquatic and semiaquatic turtles of the families Emydidae and Geoemydidae, most of which are found in fresh water in warmer areas. Frequently with distinguishing word. Cf. torup n.alligator terrapin, land terrapin, red-eared terrapin, etc.: see the first element.

Etymology: Probably < terrapin n.1Buildings of this type could be folded up into a box shape for transporting. Some constructions had a component which could be retracted into the main body, which may have suggested the name, from the resemblance to the way a terrapin retracts into its shell.
The proprietary name of a make of prefabricated building, usually having one storey and designed for temporary use.
