Etymology: medieval Latin, = ‘sealed earth’: so French terre seellée (Cotgrave), terre sigillée (Littré), Italian terra sigillata (Florio), German siegelerde . For the reason of the name, see quot. 1802 at sense 1.
1. An astringent bole, of fatty consistence and reddish colour, obtained from Lemnos; formerly esteemed as a medicine and antidote; sphragide; known also as †sealed earth (sealed adj. 1d), sigillate earth, Lemnian earth, Terra Lemnia n. Also applied to similar earths found elsewhere.

3. Archaeology. [Described in W. Dorow 1821, Opferstätte u. Grabhügel der Germanen u. Römer am Rhein ii. 32, etc.; the Roman name for the pottery is unknown.] A type of fine Roman pottery made from the first cent. b.c. to the third century a.d. in Gaul (also Italy and Germany), usually red in colour and sometimes decorated with stamped figures or patterns. Not the preferred term in English: see Arretine adj., Samian adj. and n.H. Brunsting 1972, in Westerheem 21 252–68, provides detailed references to this usage in English and in German and Dutch sources, and to the medicinal tablet or pastille (sense 1).
