Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French acharner.
Etymology: < Middle French acharner to give (a hunting dog, etc.) a taste of flesh (mid 14th cent., implied in an adjectival use of the past participle; also in reflexive use s'acharner to thirst for blood, become cruel (1394); earlier in Old French in the phrase acharné sor (to be) attacking fiercely (c1170)) < a- a- prefix5 + charn , variant of char flesh (see chare n.4).
Obsolete. rare.
transitive. To give (an animal) a taste for flesh. Also intransitive: to acquire a taste for flesh, to thirst for blood.
