Etymology: Either a blend of telephone n. and phonograph n., or < telephone n. + -o- connective + -graph comb. form.
1. U.S. A (claimed) device designed to transcribe speech automatically, combining one or more telephones and an instrument similar in function to a printing telegraph. Obsolete. rare.

1878 Galveston (Texas) Daily News 4 Jan. The telephonograph is the name of a new combination, claimed by the Atlanta Constitution to be the work of an inventor of that city.
2. Originally: a device consisting of a combination of a telephone and a phonograph, used for making permanent audio records of telephone conversations and for transmitting recorded speech over a telephone. In later use: any of various devices designed for the purpose of making audio recordings of telephone calls. Now historical.
