telephone drum n. rare (a) a cylindrical chamber forming the part of a signalling telephone (see sense 1b) in which sound is generated (obsolete); (b) a drum used for communicating messages over a distance, esp. one capable of producing a range of different tones, thus enabling complex messages to be expressed (cf. talking drum n. at talking adj. Compounds).
