Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: bordel n., -er suffix1; French bordelier.
Etymology: Partly (i) < bordel n. + -er suffix1, and partly (ii) < Middle French (French) bordelier person who frequents brothels (early 13th cent. in Old French), brothel keeper (16th cent.). Compare later brotheller n.Compare also Anglo-Norman bordelere , Old French, Middle French bordeliere (French bordelière ) prostitute (first half of the 13th cent.), and also Old Occitan bordeliera in the same sense (13th cent.). With form bordalour compare -our suffix.
Obsolete.
A brothel keeper. Perhaps also: a person who frequents brothels.
