Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Spanish. Partly a borrowing from Portuguese. Etymons: Spanish telenovela; Portuguese telenovela.
Etymology: Partly (i) < Spanish telenovela (apparently c1961 or earlier (compare quot. 1961); < tele- tele- comb. form + novela novel n.), and partly (ii) < Portuguese telenovela (1966 or earlier; < tele- tele- comb. form + novela novel n.). Compare later novela n.In form telenovella probably after novella n.
Esp. in Latin America: a Spanish-language or Portuguese-language television soap opera.
