Etymology: < Irish tearmann, †tearmonn lands of a church or monastery within which there was right of sanctuary (Early Irish termann ) < classical Latin terminus limit, bound, in post-classical Latin also territory (Vulgate: see terminus n.).With the use of words for boundaries to denote territory compare also e.g. march n.3 II.

In Ireland: an area of land belonging to a church or monastery within which a person was immune from secular taxation; (more generally) all the lands owned by a particular church or religious house.
